Star Trek (PG-13, Action, Sci-Fi) B-

Set in the future the newest crew of the Starship Enterprise has to deal with a major problem in deep space. The special effects were excellent as they should be in a big budget film. The beaming in and out special effect from the 1960’s TV show was better than the one used in the movie, showing how ahead of its time that show was. Some displeasing changes are made in the original continuity of the show. The movie also suffers from major and numerous plot conveniences were something works or doesn’t work to move or advance the plot.

Usually Star Trek has a lot of depth and a few action scenes; this movie was mostly all action and not much depth. There were some great action scenes though. Some scenes that involved a monster were completely unnecessary. Even the alien ship is of monstrous proportions which works at first as a scary thing but as the movie progresses it just looks foolish. The director and actors did a good job matching the personalities of the original characters but there were two that weren’t played as they should have been. One of the coolest characters has been reduced to the role of class clown. After seeing this movie I felt like another reboot to the series will be needed. It’s very disappointing since this was a movie I was anticipating very much.
