Brooklyn’s Finest (R, Police Drama) D+
This movie is about three police officers in Brooklyn that aren’t very happy with their job or lives. Ethan Hawke plays the part of a cop that is struggling to get enough money to buy a new home so he steals money from drug gangs. Don Cheadle is an undercover agent that wants out of his present assignment. Richard Gere is a street cop with only seven days left to retire, he is tired of his job and has thoughts of suicide. For almost ¾ of the movie the characters are just complaining and dealing with their problems. They each have their individual sub plots which weren’t too interesting. Official Site
She’s Out of My League (R, Comedy) C This Movie Opens March 12th
A security screener meets a beautiful woman when she leaves her cell phone behind. To his surprise they start dating even though all his friends and family tell him that she is too good for him. Most of the supporting characters in this film were more obnoxious than actually funny. This is one of those movies were they take a joke or an idea and keep repeating it over and over. The film does a fair job at adding some depth to the story but it could have been a lot better. Official Site
Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief (PG-13, Adventure) B-
Percy learns very suddenly that his Dad is Poseidon and that he has special powers that revolve around water. In order to save the Earth it’s up to Percy to find the lightning thief and bring it back to Zeus. Even though this movie is aimed at kids it could have been a little more serious in many instances. Percy seems to react with little surprise at every wild situation that happens to him. The story was good though and the special effects were fun to watch. Official Site
The Crazies (R, Thriller, Horror) B+
A sheriff (Timothy Oliphant) in a small town slowly discovers that some people are acting strangely and becoming violent. It turns out they have some type of rabies like infection. There’s a lot more to the story which is not just about running away from monsters and shooting them up. There were a lot suspenseful moments in this film and it has a good accounting about the limitations the characters face in their struggle to survive. Official Site
Cop Out (R, Comedy) F
Two Police officers get placed on suspension after messing up a drug raid. Which makes it very difficult for Jimmy (Bruce Willis) to pay for his daughter’s wedding. So he decides to sell a valuable Baseball card until it gets stolen. With the help of his partner Paul (Tracy Morgan) they have to track down the thief and recover the card. Except for Sean William Scott’s character the comedic parts in this movie were awful. The violence in the film was too excessive for a movie that is supposed to be light hearted and funny. Shutter Island (R, Drama, Thriller) C+
In the 1950’s a U.S. Marshall (Leonardo DeCaprio) and his partner (Mark Ruffalo) arrive at an island where criminally insane people are kept. A patient has escaped the facility but no one seems to be able to explain how. The medical administrator (Ben Kingsley) and his staff don’t seem to be very forthcoming in helping with the investigation. There are some excellent actors in this film directed by Martin Scorsese; unfortunately there are too many scenes that involve a dream sequence or some type of hallucination. After a while they were too repetitive and boring. The ending is open to interpretation which is something I don’t generally like. Official Site
Valentine’s Day (PG-13, Romantic Comedy) F+
This film shows how various couples and some single people spend their Valentine’s Day. It has some well like movies stars such as Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Biel, Patrick Dempsey and Jamie Foxx among many others. There are so many different story lines in this movie that none of them get a chance to develop an interesting story or get you drawn in to any of the characters. It’s full of bad jokes such as Anne Hathaway’s recurring caller on the phone. Official Site
The Wolfman (R, Action, Drama, Sci-Fi) B
After receiving the news that his brother has been killed savagely Lawrence (Benicio del Toro) returns to England to investigate. Once he arrives he becomes infected by the bite of a Wolfman and thereby turns into a Wolfman at night. The movie was great in the sense that it had a good story, it’s not one of these films such as Friday the 13th were the monster kills people every so often and the people are in fear. In this film people actually fight back and confront the monster. The films drawback is that it’s a bit predictable and it looses the opportunity to demonstrate or emphasize what makes a real monster. Official Site
The Spy Next Door (PG, Action, Family) B
A spy for the CIA retires and ends up babysitting his girlfriends three kids who don’t like him and do everything they can to get him to break the relationship. At the same time some of his old enemies chase him down which places him and the kids in danger. The action scenes were Jackie Chan jumps all over the place and fights were great fun to watch. The story between him and the kis was formulaic but it was still entertaining to watch. Official Site
When in Rome (PG, Romantic Comedy) B
Beth (Kristen Bell) hasn’t had a lot of luck when it comes to love. While attending her sister’s wedding in Rome she takes some coins from “the fountain of love”. To her surprise the men who threw the coins fall in love with her due to a magical spell from the fountain. She soon has a group of men chasing her. When she discovers that Nick (Josh Duhamel) also threw a coin into the fountain she is not sure if he really loves her or not. Some of the men chasing her weren’t too funny but Beth was fun to watch and she had great chemistry with Nick. Official Site
Edge of Darkness (R, Action, Thriller) A-
A Boston police detective (Mel Gibson) has his daughter visiting at home. When they step out the door she is shot at in a drive by shooting that he assumes was aimed at him. He then sets out to find the gunman and anybody else who is responsible for her death. This was a realistic action movie with a great conspiracy story. Mel Gibson is excellent at portraying the grief and emotion a father would experience after such an ordeal. The only drawback in the movie is that one of the characters was difficult to understand when he spoke. Official Site
Crazy Heart (R, Drama) A-
Bad Blake (Jeff Bridges) used to be a well known and sought after country singer who is now playing at small venues such as local bowling alleys and barely making enough money to survive. At the same time he is in extremely bad health and has a drinking problem. Even though he is going through a rough time the character is still very easy going and doesn’t seem to want to harm anyone thereby making him very likable and someone you want to root for. Legion (R, Action, Horror) A-
When God looses faith in humanity he sends his angels to wipe out the Earth. The archangel Michael (Paul Bettany) decides to help by ensuring that a particular baby is born. With a group of other strangers he makes a stand at an isolated diner in the desert. This movie does an excellent job at getting you connected to all of the characters. It would have been better if the story provided some more in depth explanations but the main character wasn’t too forthcoming. Dennis Quaid appears in the movie as the owner of the small diner. The Book of Eli (R, Action, Sci-Fi) A-
In a post apocalyptic world s Eli (Denzel Washington) travels alone with a special book that he has to take to the West. During his travel he encounters a sort of town mayor (Gary Oldman) that becomes obsessed with him because of his fighting abilities. When the mayor realizes that Eli has the special book he becomes a lot more insistent in keeping him in the town or just taking the book from him. Eli refuses to hand the book over which leads to some great action scenes and focal point for the story. Official Site
The Lovely Bones (PG-13, Drama) A-
After her death a 14 year old girl gives a brief look into her life before she was murdered and demonstrates how her family coped. We also get to see what her death is like while she is caught between Earth and Heaven. During the narration she also shows how the killer eluded the police and any suspicion. Some of the background music or noise was very unpleasant but it might be the feeling the directory wanted to convey. Official Site
Avatar 3-D (PG-13, Action, Sci-Fi) B+
A Marine who has lost the ability to walk gets drafted to control a body (Avatar) that looks like an alien in a world were a large group of humans have settled. The humans have all the advanced technology and weapons while the local inhabitants (the Na’Vi) primarily have bows and arrows. The Marine job is to infiltrate and gain the trust of the Na’Vi in order to provide information to his military superior. Half the movie is about him forming his relationship with the Na’Vi princess who is placed in charge of teaching him their customs. The special effects were excellent and the story keeps you fully interested most of the time, it was a bit drawn out during the first half. There weren’t any memorable 3-D effects were stuff is thrown at you, it’s more of a 3-D effect to make you feel you are inside the film. Official Site
Up in the Air (R, Drama) A-
This is George Clooney’s best movie yet. He plays the part of Ryan Bingham, who is travelling most of the year all over the United States coldly firing executives who are no longer needed by their company. He loves his job, and the fact that he has to travel so much. When a new employee gets hired at his company she brings up an idea that will change his work life, which is a very daunting though for him. Official Site
